This year, the Toyota Kalahari 1000 Desert Race will take place between 23 and 26 June in Jwaneng, attracting adrenalin junkies and motoring enthusiasts from all over.
One of the most popular off road races in Africa, it is known to attract over 120 000 spectators each year – both locals and international visitors alike. With 19 designated vantage points along the route, the immense crowds are sure to be well catered for.
Speaking about the upcoming event, Kietumetse Setang, the Botswana Tourism Organization (BTO) Communication Manager, said “It is without a doubt a marquee event in our calendar, the biggest. You can see by the number of tourists visiting the country just for this event”. As major sponsors of the race, BTO are joined by the SA National Off Road Car Racing Association and Mascom.
Established in 1975, and relocated to Gauteng between 1980 and 1991, this is the 30th edition of the Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race in Botswana. Once again, it is positioned as a feeder event to the Dakar Rally.
Located near Botswana’s Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the race route features plenty of sand, and rocky outcrops – making it one of the toughest off-road challenges in the world.
The weekend boasts a feast of national championship racing taking place: rounds two and three of the Botswana National Off Road Championship, round three of the Donaldson Cross Country Racing Championship, and rounds three and four of the South African Cross Country Motorcycle and Quad Racing Championships.
The festivities kick off on Friday, June 24, with a 120km-long qualifying race which starts and finishes at the Jwaneng Sports Club. Day two will see competitors complete two 225km loops towards Maokane, Lefhoko and Makhomma, before doubling back to the finish line in Jwaneng. Last, but not least, the final day consists of two 190km loops out towards Lefhoko, Tshono, Tsonyane and Sese.
